CHAPTER 8

Susan was stocking her doughnut racks when Kip showed up for breakfast. Susan had been waiting rather anxiously for him to arrive. Kip sat at on the cream-colored vinyl stool across the counter from her. “Do you have any sour cream doughnuts today? You know how much I love those.”

His smirk let her know that he was interested in an update on the case and that he was in no rush to discuss it. She enjoyed this dance, maybe he would give her something if she gave him something first, “Sure, have one on the house.”She offered him a warm sour cream doughnut on a napkin.

“Don’t mind if I do.” He ate the doughnut slowly and deliberately in total silence.

“Kip, tell me!” she insisted impatiently. “Did you find any new clues?”

“Rosa, the groundskeeper didn’t have an alibi, so Frank and I paid her a visit and imagine my surprise when I saw a box of pastries from your bakery sitting on her kitchen counter. Now that is my idea of a coincidence!”

“My bakery is very popular.”

“So you are saying that you didn’t go to her house to investigate?

“No, I’m not saying that. Mr. Giles and I paid a friendly visit to a grieving neighbor. That’s not illegal, the last time I checked.”

“Well, it doesn’t matter anyway. We have a more viable suspect now. “

“We received an anonymous tip that Kyle Brenner was spotted at the old fairgrounds tent where Zena was being held. We pulled up and there he was. We feel like he was there to find something he left behind. So we picked him up. We got a warrant and found plenty of goodies back at his trailer. He’s down at the station now.”

“Has he confessed? “

“Nope. He hasn’t said anything useful at all. Now his lawyer has advised him to exercise his right to remain silent, which is a shame, because our case is pretty weak as of now. It would be nice if he could fill in the gaps for us,” Kip said jokingly. “His prints were on the chain and the collar, but that is something any good defense attorney will explain away. But some of the evidence we found at his place is a horse of another color. All in all, there are still pieces missing from this puzzle.”

Susan strongly agreed with that assessment of the situation. “So has he told you anything about why he was there?

“Oh, sure, before he went silent, Kyle says he received a ransom note for Zena’s safe return. He was supposed to meet the kidnapper at the old fairgrounds.”

“Really? Did he have any proof of that? “

“Not really.”

“Do you think he did it?” Susan wondered aloud.

“Well, it comes down to motive, means, and opportunity. He’s got opportunity. That’s the beauty of an inside job, he’s got unlimited access. A white tiger is worth a fortune to some unsavory types, so he’s got motive. It’s the means that I’m still working on. What kind of connections does he
